Patrick Mahomes Says Giants’ Titanic Upset in Super Bowl 42 Was 'One Of Two Best NFL Moments'
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Patrick Mahomes knows a thing or two about winning Super Bowls. The forefront of the NFL’s newest dynasty has hoisted three Lombardi Trophies and is the current holder of what was once the most expensive contract in sports.

But when pressed about what he considers the greatest moment in football history, he singled out Super Bowl 42, the Giants’ slaying of the 18-0 Patriots, as one of those moments.

The Giants Won Super Bowl 42

The 2007 New England Patriots are still considered one of the best teams ever assembled. The Patriots steamrolled their way to nearly 37 points per game on the strength of Tom Brady throwing 50 touchdown passes, 23 of those to Randy Moss. Their defense also only gave up 17 points a game for the entire 16-game season. Their 16-0 regular season would never be matched after the league went to 17 games to start the 2021 season.

The Giants stared down the mighty Patriots after a 10-6 regular season record, which included having already lost to New England in the regular season finale. Their playoff push included three upsets over division winners, ending with sending Brett Favre to his (first) NFL retirement. When it came time for Super Bowl 42, we all know what happened next.

Patrick Mahomes Gives Opinion On Giants’ Triumph

In a recent appearance on Logan Paul’s ImPaulsive Podcast, the three-time Super Bowl champion gave his candid opinion on why the ultimate result of Super Bowl 42 was so important and thus, one of the best moments in NFL history:

“Just because that Giants team was like barely made the playoffs and then they make a run and they are huge underdogs and they end up beating probably the best — even though that they didn’t win the Super Bowl — probably the best football team of all time and that Patriots team that ends up losing that Super Bowl.”

And one specific moment Mahomes singled out was David Tyree’s now-immortalized helmet catch. The catch in question came on a 4th down that would have sealed New York’s fate if the play did not connect.

The Giants won Super Bowl 42, 17-14. Four years later,  Big Blue once again took down the Patriots in Super Bowl 46 under incredibly similar circumstances.
